2005 - Year of Music in Review
aka Dave's Fave's of 2005
Since it's the end of the year, and i listen to a fair bit of music (tho of a pretty narrow genre, mainly 'alt rock'), i figure i should post my fave's (and not-so-fave's..and disappointments) of the year.
This is out of a selection of over 40 albums i encountered that were released in 2005:
The Tops (My ultimate fave's, tho you won't likely agree.)
===========
Beck - Guero (Deluxe), i don't think Beck can do wrong, this is a brilliant album as usual, more of a 'party' album, good fun.
Spoon - Gimme Fiction, this might be the 'breakout band' of the year for me, brilliant album!! Totally rockin', they've got some of those new alt-disco beats, quite enjoyable.
Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart, this isn't my typical genre, but i fucking love this album. Prolly better fits below, but i thought this space would look weird with only two items. =)
Special Mention/Specialty (Slightly off the beaten path, or high in attractive 'quirk' factor.)
===========
Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs, good stuff! Andrew Bird is consistantly good, filling the 'soft' void that i find i'm missing in my collection.
At The Drive In - This Station is Non-Operational, rockin' tunes for the bike, tho might not be enjoyed by all.
Electric Six - Senor Smoke, hahaha - sorry, but i *love* these guys.
Serena Maneesh - ST, if you liked My Bloody Valentine, then check this out.
Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers, some solid 'alt rock', i enjoyed this one.
Not Bad (Prolly can't go wrong getting any of these..)
===========
50 Foot Wave - Golden Ocean, i live Kristen Hersch, especially Throwing Muses. This seemed a bit more rockin' than the last 50' album, but still didn't really grab me and give me a shake.
Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness, gave it a few spins, catchy stuff!
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans, they're softening up a little too much, but still a good album.
Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine, i'm told this is an amazing album, i've listened to it over a dozen times, but i'm not seeing it yet...i don't think it compares to previous albums. The Jon Brion album is noteworthy as well (slightly different, was released on the interweb.) Is Fiona still vegan?
Frank Black - Honeycomb, this was almost closer to 'dissapointing', but hey, it's FB. I still *love* his older solo albums...i'm not so into the Nashville sound...it seems there will likely be a new Pixies album in 2006, so let's see where he goes with that. (For those who don't know, i actually founded/run www.FrankBlack.net )
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better, not as strong as their first album, but still pretty rockin'.
Gorillaz - Demon Days, mainly a fan of Blur, so enjoyed those elements.
Ladytron - Witching Hour, i gotta throw a little electronic in there too. =)
Lou Barlow - Emoh, crikey, i forget this came out! I really like Lou, this is a pretty mellow album, and perhaps a little lacklustre, but as the heading says: 'not bad'.
Moby - Hotel, fellow vegan muso! Never really listened to this much..
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema, almost put this under 'Disappointing' due to high expectations. It's 'alright', but it seems to me that they didn't put too much effort into it.
Pres of the US - Love Everybody, also to be filed under 'didn't listen to it too much', some catchy stuff for sure tho.
Sleater-Kinny - The Woods, women who rock! I'm not the hugest SK fan, but i enjoyed this, some really catchy stuff in there.
Stephen Malkmus - Face the Truth, he can do better, but again, 'not bad'.
The Decemberists - Picaresque, need to spin it a few more times too.
Disappointing (You've hurt my musical feelings.)
===========
Beck - Guerolito, sorry, i'm just not into remixes.
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute, don't know what they did here, but i couldn't really get into it.
Neil Young - Prarie Wind, better than his last god-ridden album, but nothing on here really grabbed me.
Supergrass - Road to Rouen, hmmmm...
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan, i never thought i'd have to stick these guys in this category, but this album was rather disappointing for me. A few good numbers, but overall, i'm left going 'huh?'
Bombed - You're On Notice!
===========
Liz Phair - Somebodys Miracle, holy shit Liz Phair sucks now. More like Britney Spears than Liz Phair of old.
Sigor Ros - Takk, WTF is this SHIT? How can people enjoy this? Gaaah.. (On top of it all, i don't trust music in a language i can't understand..sorry. I don't want to be caught singing along with something like 'i like to put babies penises in my mouth'.)
=======================================
There you have it! Comment away. =)

I have been meaning to get BSS..i can see the appeal of Martha..what are the Eels like?
Didn't like the Dears, the rest are unknown..
I'll check out some Sam Cooke.. I'd say Beck is my #1 fav. Leadbelly, eh?

I also recommend Skip James.
I like Leadbelly's singing style. He sings like he has no teeth.
Someone suggested that Beck might have been listening to the Eels alot while he was writing and recording Guero. I can hear how the Eels might have influenced the direction of that album.
The Eels did the Musical Score for Levity, which I really enjoyed.

Listening to Cooke right now, some familiar tunes there!
Got the Stars, Eels, Feist and even Coldplay..sadly, none are 'grabbing' me...prolly the order there is my preference so far, but i'll listen more of course. =)

I took them to work. I thought the Pink Floyd fans would enjoy their rendition of Comfortably Numb.
I was wrong on this presumption.
You don't happen to listen to the Moldy Peaches do you?

Re: Moldy Peaches
Adam GreenHe did a song not that long ago called Jessica Simpson.
He's an odd fellow.
I watched a little film Kimya Dawson made. One of her dolls came to life and chopped off her Dreads while she was sleeping.
